DAY 4 KAYAK FISHING
Day four began with a diferent kind of silence. |ere’s the
silence of early morning on land — the gentle rustle of a
breeze, the orst tentative bird calls, the hush before human
activity. And then there’s the silence of being on the water
at dawn, before a paddle dips or a osh breaks the surface.
|e inner Golfo Dulce held that second kind of quiet as we
slid our kayaks of a muddy bank and into the warm, green
water at orst light.
Staging for the kayak expedition.
Kayak oshing here is something we know well — it’s not a
novelty for us at all. In fact, that familiarity is what made
it so special to include in this expedition. It’s comfortable,
yes, but it’s also unforgiving if you let your guard down.
|e Sweet Gulf doesn’t care if you’ve been casting these
mangrove channels for years. |e moment you lower
yourself into a little plastic boat and push of, you’re part of
the food chain just like everything else. |ere’s no engine
to announce your presence, no high deck to give you
perspective. You’re at eye level with a world that is both
pristine and primal.
