CONCLUSION: WHAT TWELVE DAYS REVEALED
For consistency, we chose fonts and styles that were easy on the eyes, and
Katie helped with a few simple Google maps that we included to trace our
route. We debated for a hot minute about including detailed location info
for some sensitive wildlife spots (like the exact coordinates of the white
toucan’s territory). In the end, we purposefully kept some locations vague
or described them generally. Conservation comes orst — the last thing we
want is hordes of people harassing a rare animal or trespassing on someone’s
land without permission. So we identioed our guides, describe how things
felt and what happened, but not always exactly where, unless it’s a wellknown protected area or lodge.
Acknowledgments in Practice: You might have noticed throughout the
narrative we mention guides and locals by name (oven orst name). |is
was very much intentional. We wanted those acknowledgments baked into
the story, not just in a thank-you list at the end (though we have that too).
Each of them have become close friends of Dennis and he routinely engages
them for his clients. We kept in touch with many of them averward and
shared our photos — a small repayment for their time and expertise. In a
couple of cases, we’ve made direct donations to community projects that
those individuals support. For example, I’m also involved with the Greater
Sustainability Collaborative (GSC), a Osa Peninsula conservation not-forproot dedicated to environmental causes in Costa Rica. See appendix.
