INTRODUCTION
Twelve days is both a long time and a short time. In less than a fortnight,
we traveled from sea level to mountaintop, revisiting old haunts and
venturing into new frontiers. We pushed our bodies hard and stretched
our minds with fresh perspectives. We lugged camera gear through
swamps and up peaks, only to learn that the chase is just one part of the
experience. |e other part is knowing when to set the camera aside and
absorb the moment directly. Each day taught us about balance: between
planning and improvisation, between pursuit and patience, between
ambition and humility. As always with wildlife photography, we missed
many more opportunities than we captured and we came to accept that.
One cannot see everything in such a short time, but perhaps one can still
learn something deeper by making the attempt.
|is introduction is not a guidebook, and the chapters that follow
won’t catalog every species or trail we encountered (indeed, we saw
only a fraction of what was out there). Instead, this book is an efort to
recalibrate expectations – ours and yours. It’s about acknowledging the
limits of even the most careful itinerary and celebrating the unexpected
riches that arise when those limits are tested. It’s about realizing that
eociency might get you from point A to point B, but oven detours
lead to the most memorable serendipitous moments. We set out with a
hypothesis that compressing adventure would give us an intense, distilled
dose of discovery. We did ond intensity – but not always in the ways we
anticipated. More oven it came in moments of quiet or nashes of insight,
sneaking up on us instead of arriving with fanfare.
In the end, Costa Rica Discovery 12·12·12 was not about how much of
Costa Rica we could see in a short time, but about how deeply we could
experience it. Familiar places reminded us that truly knowing a place is a
lifelong conversation, not a onished story. New places reminded us that
even seasoned travelers can become novices again – a welcome return to
the giv of wonder. Our local guides showed that partnership can turn a
frantic sprint into a meaningful exchange. And our cameras turned into
tools for learning – teaching us to observe patiently, to accept when a
subject stays hidden, and to cherish its rare revelations.
We compressed twelve amazing days into these pages, but the efect on
the spirit is expansive. Aver all, the true measure of travel is not how far
you go, but what you experience and how deeply you connect with where
you’ve been – even if only for a short, extraordinary time.
