DAY 11 SARAPIQUÍ: THE WHITE TOUCAN
Day eleven was about limits. We returned to the white toucan lot early,
knowing exactly how unlikely success was. |at knowledge didn’t
dampen motivation — it clarioed it. |is was not about guarantees. It
was about embracing the search.
|e white toucan is considered by many to be the single rarest bird on
the planet. |ere is only one known white toucan in the world. It lives in
a small town in the northern Caribbean rainforest of Costa Rica within
a 100 square km area. It carries a rare genetic condition responsible for
its coloration. Since its discovery in September 2019, it remains the only
documented specimen. |is wasn’t rumor. |is wasn’t legend. |is was
biology intersecting with improbability.
Over the previous two days, we had already logged nearly ten hours of
searching. We knew the math. According to our research, fewer than 200
people had ever seen this bird. Fewer than 50 had photographed it. Fewer
than 10 professional photographers had captured high-quality images.
|at context sharpened the day.
