King vulture close up.
|en came the hike. Upward. Slow. Steady. Edward led us along a trail that climbed through
layered forest, each step carrying us closer to something most people never see. |e path wasn’t
dramatic. It didn’t advertise itself. It simply kept rising, and with it came thinner air and quieter
movement.
A drone view of the River Sucio.
At a bend in the trail, Edward stopped. No explanation. Just a raised hand. And then we saw
them. King vultures. |ey were feeding. Massive. Regal. Unsettling in their focus. |eir white
bodies and black wings looked almost artiocial against the forest, faces painted with orange and
red like ceremonial masks. Watching them work was sobering. |ey are not violent. |ey are
eocient. |ey exist because death exists, and they complete the cycle without apology.
