Crimson-fronted parakeet.
By the time we turned toward Puerto Viejo and checked in at Selva Verde Lodge,
expectations had recalibrated. You don’t always get the thing you come for, and Costa
Rica does not apologize for that.
Selva Verde arrived like a sov landing. |e Sarapiquí River moved wide and steady beside
the lodge, carrying with it a diferent rhythm. |is rainforest was lower, wetter, more
layered. Where the cloud forest whispers, the lowlands hum constantly. Frogs called even
in daylight. Insects never stopped negotiating for space.
We didn’t have to search here. It ofered itself freely. A variety of familiar and new bird
species were ever present. . |e birds announced territory from multiple directions at
once. |e lodge itself felt embedded rather than imposed — structures tucked into
forest rather than clearing it away.
