By the time we reached Gema del Bosque, sitting at roughly 9,000 feet, the gulf
might as well have been another country. Jackets came out. Breath shortened
slightly. Sound fell away. Not the silence of water — the silence of altitude, where
sound is absorbed rather than echoed.
Sleep arrived fast that night, heavier than previous nights, as if the nervous
system had onally acknowledged how much had changed. Day six crossed the
expedition’s orst major threshold. Tomorrow, the targets would not be loud or
abundant. Tomorrow, we would hunt ghosts.
