In addition to the amazing scenic expanse of this region, the wildlife is
equally diverse and impressive. From Crocodiles, to birds, to monkeys, we
have found that the river experience in Sierpe is even more impressive than
on the Osa Peninsula itself primarily because of the proximity to the wildlife.
Traveling along the meandering river channels inside of the mangroves,
photographers can get within a few meters of almost every creature. On
our trip, we managed to get spectacular photos of owls, monkeys, birds,
snakes, lizards and local people (as you will soon see).
Day six was also the orst day the expedition was about to break apart
geographically. Up to this point, everything had lived inside the same
atmospheric logic: coastal heat, lowland rainforest, salt air, and humidity
that wrapped itself around us like a wet blanket. Day six dismantled that
logic, piece by piece, mile by mile.
Before committing inland on our way to the cloud forest, we made a couple
of stops east of Palmar Norte, where the landscape opens just enough to
allow perspective. |is was drone territory — the orst of several days
where aerial photography would add a dimension no ground-based lens
could ofer. From above, the rainforest and oxbow meandering river looked
inonite. Layered.
|at illusion dissolves the moment you drive into it. At ground level,
the rainforest is intimate. It presses close. It obscures distance. You feel
surrounded rather than expanded. |e drone shots served as a onal
reminder of how small we had been moving within something enormous.
